Gene Alcantara explains why Greater Londoners should vote, and the benefits they will reap from doing so.

Dear Londoners,

I stood as an Independent candidate in the European Parliamentary elections. I did not represent a political party and did not have to toe or defend any party line. As an Independent candidate, I wanted to be guided by the constituents, and if elected I wanted to be an accountable and action-oriented MEP because You Deserve Better!

I believed in fresh, clean and honest politics. I would work to eradicate waste, fraud and mismanagement within the European Commission and the European Parliament by demanding transparent accountability and independent auditing of its finances. The United Kingdom is facing the most serious financial crisis in generations, and politicians should be helping to solve your problems and looking after your interests, not their own.

I believed that everyone who was legally and permanently resident in the UK regardless of where they came from, should be treated fairly and equally. On the other hand, our borders must be tightened to control illegal immigration. I believed in better health and dental care, safety in our streets and protecting our environment. I believed in affordable quality education available to everyone, workers’ rights, and supporting entrepreneurs and businesses as key components of sustaining economic growth, stability and competitiveness.

You live in one of the 33 boroughs that make up Greater London. You deserve to have someone in Europe who will be guided by your terms of reference.  Whilst there were benefits in being a member, I believed the European Union should not be able to dictate everything that happens in member countries.

FACT: Two-thirds of people in Britain apparently do not know much about what goes on in Europe and feel left out and uninformed. If elected I would have ensured your views were represented in the European Parliament and you were kept updated.

FACT: 60-80% of the thousands of legislations implemented in the UK annually come from Europe - covering employment, immigration, crime, transport, trade, the environment etc.  Whether or not you agreed with being within the European Union, i would have influenced this process on your behalf.

FACT: The Labour Government has ratified the Lisbon Treaty (similar to the old European Constitution rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005). The Irish have rejected it in a referendum. We were promised a referendum but all we got was a broken promise.

It is important that you have influence in Europe and I could have been your voice!

I wanted to improve the consultation process to bring your opinions and views into European decision making. I wanted to be a visible MEP for Greater Londoners and ensure you could access me whenever you needed to through a website, by email, text, telephone or personally.

Someone needed to stand up and defend the rights of every Greater Londoner.  Instead of creating tension and fear, as espoused by certain parties, I wanted to promote integration, and harmonious community relations. We are all British and European and we should live together in peace and harmony without fear of harassment or discrimination.

"NO" to destructive parties.

"YES" to your voice in Europe.

You deserve better.
